In survey after survey, singles proclaim that personal freedom, not being held accountable to anyone, is the best thing about being single. That maybe true but I bet there are some other unknown fringe benefits to the solo life. What do you enjoy about being single that most surprises you?

I’ve been surprised by the same discovery–how much I like being on my own. We grow up with a pervasive cultural message that we can’t be complete if we’re not paired, so we tend to assume that we’ll be unhappy single until we actually are for an extended period of time. Yet every time I’ve been single for awhile, once I get over the initial pain of the last break-up, I find that I’m happier alone without having to worry about, cater to, or consult with someone else. I’m now single completely by choice.
